More about Bridge..

Previous

Bridge cont'd

Bridge is a device that connects 2 LAN segments together, which may be of similar or dissimilar types, such as Ethernet and Token Ring.
A bridge is inserted into a n/w to segment it and keep traffic contained within the segments to improve performance.
Bridges learn from experience and build and maintain address tables.By monitoring which station acknowledge receipt of address, they learn which nodes belong to the segment.
Bridges work at the data link layer(MAC) whereas routers work at the n/w layer.
Bridges are protocol independent, routers are protocol dependent.
Bridges are faster than routers.Bridges with more than 2 ports perform a switching function.

Repeater,Bridge

Repeater

Repeater is a communications device that amplifies the data signal in order to extend the transmission distance. Repeaters work at layer 1 of the OSI model.

Bridges

Bridges connect 2 n/ws that use the same technology (eg. Ethernet and ARCNET).
The use of bridge increases maximum possible size of n/w.
Unlike a repeater which simply passes all signals it receives ,a bridge selectively determine the appropriate segment to which it should pass a signal. It does this by reading the address of all the signals it receives. The bridge reads the physical location of the source and destination computer from this address.

Pope Francis speaks on Climate Change

Source: The New York Times and Economic Times

Pope Francis forcefully urges action to combat climate change, criticizing the sale of "carbon credits".
Confronting the climate crisis will require a deeper, spiritual transformation of society, replacing consumption with sacrifice, greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing."
The central idea in all these programs-from Emission Trading System in Europe to carbon tax adopted in the Canadian province of British Columbia-is to put a price on Carbon,so that all businesses and consumers are charged for the environmental consequences of their actions.
Pope Francis agrees that "the economic resources and social costs of using up shared environmental resources" must be fully borne by those who incur them".
Pope Francis endorses the principle of "polluter pays".
For countries that rely on nuclear power, like France ,or burn very little coal, reducing green house gas emissions is enormously costly.By contrast,China can achieve reductions at a small fraction of cost.
PM of India, Narendra Modi wants to assert green credentials of India ahead of key global summit on climate change in Paris later this year. The French will be lending strong support.
Modi will co-launch a book on the urgent need for protecting the environment with French President Francois Holland's to make the point.
The aim of the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, in which 196 countries are participating, is to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, in order to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius.
Modi govt. is emphasizing India's commitment to the cause by initiatives on solar and wind power, environment friendly life style choices. It also pointed out that developed nations cannot escape their responsibility.

Network Interface Card(NIC)
It is also known as Network adapter. It is a printed circuit board that plugs into both the clients and servers and controls the exchange of data between them.
The network adapter provides service at the data link level of the n/w,which is also known as the access method (OSI layers 1 and 2).The most common n/w adapters are Ethernet and Token Ring. The Ethernet adapter ,sometimes is built into the motherboard eg.Local Talk.
A transmission medium ,interconnects all the adapters in the network.

Know about Fathers Day,why we celebrate it!

The origin of Father's Day is not clear. Some say that it began with a church service in West Virginia in 1908. Others say the first Father's Day ceremony was held in Vancouver, Washington.
The president of the Chicago branch of the Lions' Club, Harry Meek, is said to have celebrated the first Father's Day with his organization in 1915; and the day that they chose was the third Sunday in June, the closest date to Meek's own birthday!

Regardless of when the first true Father's Day occurred, the strongest promoter of the holiday was Mrs. Bruce John Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Mrs. Dodd felt that she had an outstanding father. He was a veteran of the Civil War. His wife had died young, and he had raised six children without their mother.

The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special. .

In 1909, Mrs. Dodd approached her own minister and others in Spokane about having a church service dedicated to fathers on June 5, her father's birthday. That date was too soon for her minister to prepare the service, so he spoke a few weeks later on June 19th. From then on, the state of Washington celebrated the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Children made special desserts, or visited their fathers if they lived apart.

States and organizations began lobbying Congress to declare an annual Father's Day.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea, but it was not until 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations." Since then, fathers had been honored and recognized by their families throughout the country on the third Sunday in June.

When children can't visit their fathers or take them out to dinner, they send a greeting card. Traditionally, fathers prefer greeting cards that are not too sentimental. Most greeting cards are whimsical so fathers laugh when they open them. Some give heartfelt thanks for being there whenever the child needed Dad.

Wireless Networks cont'd

Previous: Wireless LANs

3)Wireless WANs
The radio n/w used for cellular telephones is an example of a low bandwidth wireless system. This system has gone through 3 generations-
1)First generation-analog & voice only
2)Second generation-digital & for voice only
3)Third generation-digital & is for both voice & data

Wireless LANs can operate at 50 Mbps.
Cellular system operate at about 1 Mbps.
Wireless internet service is often called local multipoint distribution service eg.mts
Almost all wireless n/ws hook up to the wired n/w at some point to provide access to files, databases & the internet.
Many n/ws exist in the world,often with different h/w & s/w.
The fulfillment of this desire requires that different & frequently incompatible n/ws be connected by means of machines called gateways to make the connection and provide the necessary translation, both in terms of h/w and s/w called internetwork or internet.
If the system within the gray area contains only routers it is a subnet.
If it contains both routers & hosts it is a WAN.
As an analogy, the telephone system consists of telephone switching offices connected to one another by high speed lines & to houses & business by low speed lines.
These lines and equipment, owned and managed by telephone company form the subnet of telephone system.

Wireless Networks

Previous

Wireless n/w can be divided into 3 main categories-

1)System interconnection
2)Wireless LANs
3)Wireless WANs

System interconnection
It is all about interconnecting the components of a computer using short-range radio.
Some companies got together to design a short-range wireless n/w called Bluetooth to connect these components without wires.
Bluetooth also allows digital cameras, headsets, scanners and other devices to connect to a computer by merely being brought within range.
System interconnection n/w use the master slave paradigm. The system unit is normally the master, talking to the mouse, keyboard as slaves.
The master tells the slaves what addresses to use, when they can broadcast ,how long they can transmit, what frequencies they can use etc.

Wide Area Network cont'd

Previous:WAN

The collection of communication lines and routers form the subnet. When a packet is sent from 1 router to another via 1 or more intermediate routers, the packet is received at each intermediate router in its entirety, stored until required output line is free and then forwarded.A subnet organized according to this principal is called a store and forward packet switched subnet.
When packet are small and all the same size, they are often called cells.
Packet travelling bearing number in the sequence.
Not all WANs are packet switched. A second possibility for a WAN is a satellite system.
Each router has an antenna through which it can send and receive. All routers can hear the output from satellites.

Are cold foods comfortable or hot foods during Summer?

There is a belief that hot foods eg. piping hot coffee, tea, soups are efficacious in summer because they induce perspiration which leaves the person feeling cooler. This is a myth.Taking hot foods to reduce body temperature will not only make you uncomfortable because of the heat but the sweat makes you feel worse.
Cold foods should be eaten, yes as well as no.While cold beverages and salads are comfortable in consuming, food that has been kept aside for many hours at room temperature might harbour bacteria.Food borne illnesses are an all time high in summer. The danger zone for rapid multiplication of bacteria is 4 to 60 degrees Celsius.
Spicy foods are also believed to be beneficial in beating heat.Though this is not true, spicy foods can get the gastric juices flowing and improve appetite in summer. Some Asian cuisines have spicy soups served cold-double benefit perhaps.
Summer foods need to give energy and hydration.
Load yourself with water filled varieties of fruits and vegetables. Eat plenty of gourd and leafy veggies-bottle gourd, ridge gourd, snake gourd,mint..
Enjoy melons,tomatoes,mangoes and other summer fruits.Drink coconut water,lime juice,buttermilk.
Use sprouts as they are high in moisture content.
Drink lots of water.
Avoid fatty foods eg.fries, meat as they are difficult to digest.
Caffeinated beverages and alcohol are dehydrating.
